I rated this book 5 *****’s

This book blew my mind away

The best book I read from Ms. Lauren Carr this year. This book blew my mind away. I thought I figured out who the killer is but I was wrong. When your an investigator and retired, your mind never stop solving mystery murders especially the cold case and the Geezer Squad. These guys are beyond amazing. My hats off to them.

Being greedy always is badly and will always end in the deadly path. Second romance is sweeter than the first time. This book is so much of family love, hilarious and at the same time mesmerizing.

This book is hard to put it down. I was glued right away. Ms. Lauren Carr, you nailed this book again. I cannot wait for your next book.

Lauren, tell us a little bit about your new release, Ice.

Ice is an enthralling cold case mystery that follows a former FBI agent who joins forces with a group of retired specialists. As they search out clues from crimes in the past, dark secrets are finally brought to light, thawing out cases that were once ice cold.

Twenty-five years ago, Sandy Lipton and her unborn child disappeared, and the court of public opinion found Chris Matheson, a college senior, guilty. Decades later, the retired FBI agent returned to his family home to discover that the cloud of suspicion cast over him and his family had never lifted.

With the help of the Geezer Squad, Chris Matheson starts chipping away at the ice on this cold case to uncover what had happened to Sandy and her baby and the clues are getting hot!

Tell us a little bit about your protagonist Chris Matheson.

The sudden death of his wife, killed during a terrorist attack in France, and the death of his father prompts Chris’s retirement as an investigator with the FBI. He moves back home to the family farm to live with his mother, who helps him to raise his three young daughters.

Notice that Chris is surrounded by women since he’s raising three little girls and lives with his mother, who is also dealing with the loss of her husband. But there is one male in his family for him to lean on. That’s Sterling, another retiree. He’s a law enforcement K-9, who recently lost his handler in an ambush.

What inspired you to have your male protagonist surrounded by women?

My own life. At one point, I was surrounded by men. I lived with my husband, son, and father-in-law (who has since passed away) under one roof. It was very frustrating because none of them seemed to understand me. We would actually get into arguments over their inability to understand. They’d go to the barber and pay ten dollars. I would go to the hairdresser and pay over a hundred, and they decided there was something wrong with me. Once, in the midst of this very frustrating period, someone pointed out to me, “Even your dogs are male.” That’s right. We had three big dogs and they were all male, too!

I actually went looking for a fluffy female purse dog because I was desperate for someone to understand me.

Chris Matheson is not so desperate. He handles the whole situation with humor. At one point, his six-year-old daughter sends him a text photo of Sterling, his German shepherd, who she has fitted with a tiara for a tea party. Chris jumps in his truck and rushes home to save him. From that point on, Chris takes Sterling everywhere with him.

While the women in his life may not understand him, Chris understands them. It is his depth of understanding women that aids him in solving a murder in ICE.

Your protagonist lives with his mother? Does she play a role in Chris’s investigation?

I love Doris Matheson. It was while going through the edits for ICE that I realized there is a lot of my late mother, who recently passed away, in Chris’s mother. Maybe that’s why I created her. She had married Chris’s father, a state police captain when she was only eighteen years old and has only recently been widowed. Yet, she is an emotionally strong woman, who has the ability to take charge of any situation. In one scene in ICE, Chris’s former boss, who is eight months pregnant, seems to go into early labor in their kitchen. While Chris and the local police lieutenant stand there in shock, Doris rushes in and takes over with such authority that the woman thinks she’s a doctor. Correcting her, Helen says she’s a librarian. But that’s okay because she reads a lot.

Like most mothers and sons, Chris and Doris share a loving relationship, but he’s not a momma’s boy by any means. Though, she does have the power to nag, which is how Chris ends up joining the Geezer Squad.

Tell us about the Geezer Squad.

The number one rule of the Geezer Squad is never talk about the Geezer Squad.

The Geezer Squad is a private team of detectives who work under the cover of a book club, which meets at the library where Doris is the director. Chris’s father formed the group after he got kicked out of his wife’s book club. After a couple of meetings to discuss actual books, they decided to combine their skills and talents to reopen the cold cases that keep them up at night.

Most of the squad members have families who would disapprove of them returning to doing investigative work, which is the reason for their secrecy.

You release three, sometimes four, books a year. Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Both. When I get really rolling with a storyline and the words are coming easily, I can’t stop. There have been times when I have been left alone that I’ll start getting stomach pangs and realize I hadn’t eaten all day long. But the words and flowing and I can’t stop. I’m energized and completely focused. That’s when my husband will drag me away from the laptop and out to dinner to get food into me.

Then, when I’ve finished a book—I’m exhausted. After I had finished writing ICE and sent in the manuscript, I slept twelve hours a day for three days. My husband thought I was sick. No, I wasn’t sick. I was exhausted.

Do you have a favorite character or one that is especially close to your heart?

Gnarly! I have a special place in my heart for Candidate for Murder, because that is Gnarly’s story. I dedicated it to the real Gnarly, who passed away from canine cancer only a few months after that book’s release.

Now, I have a special spot for Sterling, the German shepherd in Chris Matheson’s series. The real Sterling is Gnarly’s nephew, who landed in an animal shelter on the same day Gnarly passed away. We adopted him eleven days later. Sterling is goofier than Gnarly and his best friend is Thor, another pet in the Matheson household. That’s all I’ll say. You need to read Ice to meet Thor and Sterling.

What is the best gift you have ever received; do you still have it and who gave it to you?

I have to say Sterling. After we found out that Gnarly’s nephew, a pup from his sister’s litter, had been turned into an animal shelter on the same day that Gnarly passed away, my son Tristan insisted on getting him out as my Christmas present. Sterling and I bonded instantly. He truly helped to mend my broken heart over Gnarly. He was the best Christmas present ever!

What is next for you?

I am working on two books that I expect to be released early summer and another this fall.

Look for the third Thorny Rose Mystery early this summer. Murder by Perfection.

Frustrated with their busy schedules, Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday attempt to find togetherness taking a couple’s gourmet cooking course at the Stepford Kitchen Studio, taught by Chef Natalie Stepford.

As if spending her date night cooking isn’t bad enough, Jessica is further annoyed when the beautiful, talented, successful businesswoman starts paying too much one-on-one time with Murphy. When Natalie ends up dead, the Thorny Rose detectives find togetherness doing what they do best. As they peel back the layers of the Stepford marriage, they discover that the pursuit of perfection can be deadly.

But wait! There’s more! Look for a Mac Faraday Mystery this fall! The next installment in the Mac Faraday Mysteries will be coming out just in time for Christmas – A Murder for Christmas (working title).
